EU: Press release on the13th meeting of the EU-Morocco Association Council
The 13th meeting of the EU-Morocco Association Council was held in Brussels on 14 December. At this meeting, the EU reconfirmed its commitment to its partnership with Morocco, which plays a key role in the southern neighbourhood. As part of the review of the European neighbourhood policy, the EU wishes to enhance and broaden its cooperation with Morocco, based on the shared values of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms. The dialogue, which also touched on the recent decision of the General Court of the EU, was open and constructive. The Foreign Affairs Council today adopted a decision to appeal against the General Court's decision and to request that, as an interim measure, the enforcement of the judgment be suspended.
The Association Council was co-chaired by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, Ms Federica Mogherini, and the Moroccan Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr Salaheddine Mezouar. The European Commission was represented by Mr Johannes Hahn, the commissioner for the European neighbourhood policy and enlargement negotiations.
The Association Council meeting allowed the EU to review the major areas of common interest in which the EU is working together with Morocco, which include migration, security and counter-terrorism.
It also provided the opportunity for a high-level political exchange on the many regional issues of common interest, such as regional integration, Libya, Syria and the Sahel.
