Graduated with a Law Degree.
Specialised in Labour Law.
Activities
Joined the Socialist Youth in 1962.
He has been Secretary General of PSOE from October 1974 to June 1997.
Mr. González was the number one candidate for Madrid to the House of Deputies during the first General Elections held in June 1977.
He has served as Member of the House of Deputies in all the terms of legislature since then.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
On October 28, 1982 the PSOE obtained absolute parliamentary majority in the elections and Mr. González was elected President of the Government by the House of Deputies, being in office up to 1996, after winning two General Elections by absolute majority and one by majority.
He is the S.I. (Socialist International) Vice-Chairman since 1978.
He heads the Global Progress Commission for the renewal of the S. I. since September 1996.
In May 1993, Mr. González was awarded with the Charlemagne Prize.
On March 3, 1996 he was again elected Member of the House of Deputies for Madrid.
In December 1996 he was appointed as Special Representative of the Chairman-in-office of the OSCE to head a mission into the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
In October 1997 He was awarded with the Great Golden Cross for Merit by the Republic of Austria.
He chairs the Global Progress Foundation.
He is currently carrying out a Mission to mediate in the conflict of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, including Kosovo, appointed by de Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, and as a Special Representative of the EU for the resolution of the problems of the FRY, including Kosovo, with the support of the UN Security Council.
