Risks and Opportunities 2020: what will the new year bring?

Riska and opportunities

On 23 February the Council Library invited Nick Redman, Oxford Analytica's Director of Analysis and Editor in Chief of the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief, to give a presentation entitled Risks and Opportunities 2020: what will the new year bring?

In what was a wide-ranging presentation, the topics discussed included:

  • Transnational risks such as cybercrime as a shock to domestic politics, and opportunities  - companies acting to address climate change threats
  • Conflict escalation in Iran, Kashmir and the South China Sea and de-escalation in Yemen and Afghanistan
  • Political paralysis in countries like Ethiopia and Uzbekistan, and emancipation in Kazakhstan, Malaysia etc.
  • Trade barriers rising and falling, shocks to the WTO system, etc.
  • Investment, both welcomed and rebuffed in countries like Brazil, China and Turkey
  • Sanctions - what the prospects are for Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Sudan and Qatar.

The event is part of the series of Council Library information sessions with publishers, authors and information providers aimed at promoting the library collections to our users.
