Event report

The European Space Agency (ESA) has sites in several European countries, but the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, is the largest. ESTEC is ESA's technical heart, where most projects are born and are guided through the various phases of development.

The Library and Research Sector attended the workshop on the 'Impact of referenda on parliamentary democracy', in the framework of the PADEMIA project. The workshop was an opportunity to look into the interaction of plebiscitary and parliamentary democracy, with reference to the recent developments in the UK as well as the consequences of the Brexit vote for both the UK and the EU.

The Library and Research Sector attended the policy dialogue “Moving EU enlargement forward: why better communications matters” organised in the framework of the Dutch-Slovak-Maltese Trio Presidency and under the auspices of the EPC’s European Policy and Institutions Programme.

On 14 and 15 September, the Belgium Royal Academy of Sciences hosted the conference “The Future of Europe”. The two lectures, entitled Co-creation and Sustainability, were given by Domenico Rossetti di Valdalbero.

The Library and Research Sector attended the public debate 'Youth, Radicalism and Terrorism' organised by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and the Italianieuropei Foundation, in partnership with the Belgian daily newspaper Le Soir.

The Library and Research Sector attended the 11th International Group of ExLibris Users (Igelu) conference in Trondheim (Norway) from 5 to 8 September.

The National Library is responsible for the collection, description, preservation and accessibility of Finland’s printed national heritage, and for preserving the unique collections in its care.

During our trip to Helsinki, the library team was given an interesting tour of the Pasila Library.

The Library attended the conference-discussion organised by Carnegie Europe entitled 'Weapons of Mass Diplomacy', with Antonin Baudry and Pierre Vimont as participants.

The library team attended a conference entitled 'Balancing Security vs Liberty in the Age of Global Terrorism' hosted by the AJC Transatlantic Institute and Friedrich Naumann Stiftung. The main speaker was Gilles De Kerchove, the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator.

The translation service of the Commission is huge, with over 2500 translators and support staff split evenly between Brussels and Luxembourg, and the knowledge management team is dedicated to improving the working life of each and every one of their staff members.

The Library team attended the 45th LIBER (Association of European Research Libraries/Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche) Annual Conference in Helsinki from 29 June to 1 July 2016.

During our trip to London, we could not miss a visit to the British Library of Political and Economic Science, it was imagined as a laboratory for the social sciences.

The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom. It is also the largest library in the world by number of items catalogued.

On 15 June, the General Secretariat of the Council (GSC) organised an information session on the Council's Library Resources for the Slovak Permanent Representation to the EU.

The Library recently attended the conference "Terror, Asymmetric Conflicts and Failing States: European-Israeli Dialogue on National Security and Regional Stability" at the Bibliothèque Solvay.

Representatives of the European Documentation Centres (EDCs) from the Member States made their way to Brussels for a training seminar on 2 and 3 June 2016 which the EDCs with practical input for their work on the ground.

On 1st July 2016, the Slovak Republic will take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU. It will be at the heart of the events and developments shaping the future of the European Union.

During our trip to London, the Library team visited the Senate House Library, which is the central Library of the University of London and the School of Advanced Study. Its collections support academic research across 14 main subject areas in the arts, humanities and social sciences, and it is also home to unique special collections, rare books and archives.
