Mashreq/Maghreb Working Party (MaMa)

The Mashreq/Maghreb Working Party prepares the Council's work on EU relations with countries in the Mashreq/Maghreb region.

Role

The Mashreq/Maghreb Working Party (MaMa) deals with the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) with regard to the southern Mediterranean partners: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia.

It also deals with EU cooperation with countries in North Africa and the Middle East, within the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean, as well as the League of Arab States.

In addition, the working party contributes to the preparation of Council decisions on the EU sanctions relevant for the region.

The MaMa working party reports to the Foreign Affairs Council, and prepares ministerial meetings of the Association Councils with partners which have concluded Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreements with the EU.

Composition and meetings

The MaMa working party is composed of national experts from EU member states. It usually meets twice a week.

The working party was established in 1994.
