Working Party on Statistics

Role

The Working Party on Statistics (STATIS) within the General Affairs Council is a cross-sectional body that has a general overview of all statistical questions. It receives information on statistics-related issues from other working parties. STATIS cooperates closely with the European Commission and consults with the European Parliament on proposals for new legislation, including statistics files presented by the European Central Bank.

In particular, the working party deals with statistics related to the ECOFIN Council and the European Central Bank and to national macroeconomics from EU member states. Other statistical areas include the internal market, agriculture and fisheries and social policies, as well as health and consumer protection.

Composition and meetings

The working party is composed of national experts from all EU member states, representing National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) or other relevant national authorities, depending on the subject matter under discussion. The European Commission (Eurostat) and, where relevant, the European Central Bank, also participate in the meetings.

The working party is chaired by the rotating presidency and usually meets six to ten times a year. 

The working party was established on 5 March 2003.
