EASA regulation: Drones

Drone safety: Win-win for EU consumers and economy

The EU wants to safely integrate unmanned aircraft, or drones, into the European airspace.

WHY?

By 2035, the EU drone sector is expected to:

  • create over 100,000 jobs
  • produce more than €10 billion euros per year

CHALLENGES

Current EU rules on civil aviation date back to 2008. They need to be updated because:

  • drones differ widely in size and functionality
  • the EU cannot regulate drones under 150 kilograms
  • drones can affect data protection, privacy and CO2 emissions

SOLUTIONS

A digital national registration system for drones, harmonised at EU level, is one example of the measures negotiated between the Council and the European Union.
