Remarks by President Charles Michel before the European Council meeting on 21 March 2024

I would like to thank Secretary-General António Guterres for attending this European Council meeting. It is becoming a tradition for us to have regular exchanges and cooperation. The European Union and the United Nations share the same dreams and ambitions for a world based on cooperation and for mutual respect based on fundamental values.

We are facing serious challenges, the threats posed by climate change, radical digital transformation, conflicts, and the calling into question of a rules-based world and of the UN Charter, and we believe this cooperation between the European Union and the United Nations to be crucial.

I would like to thank you, dear António, for your leadership in various fields. You are working on the preparation of the Summit of the Future. And we are determined to help you, to cooperate with you and to make sure that the EU can play a positive role to support a world based on principles, a world based on rules.

Today, with the leaders, we will have an exchange of views on various topics. We will see how we can strengthen the ties and the level of ambition in terms of cooperation with the United Nations.
