The European Alliance for Democratic Citizenship asked a group of female refugees and children to describe their experience as refugees in their mother tongue or in the language of the country that they now call home. As written in the introduction: "Some focus on traumatic experiences in the country of origin, while some examine the battles refugee women face in their new found homes".

The book's target is to do away with the scaremongering about Islam in France. The author claims there is not a single Islam, but several of them according to various schools of thought, and that the values of the French state and some of the schools of Islam are not compatible, suggesting what could be done in order to find harmony and build a fruitful dialogue.

23 April is a very symbolic day for world literature. In fact, on that date in 1616, Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare died. Moreover, there is a Catalonian tradition that each year on that same day (Diada de Sant Jordi), flowers and books are exchanged. So the date was a natural choice for UNESCO when it created a day on which to pay tribute to books, authors and copyright laws.
