In accordance with Article 12(1) of the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on International Operations, Exercises and Other Military Cooperation Events, status certificates are issued to cilivian officials and contractors (natural persons, contractors' employees), as well as their dependents, who have been assigned to foreign military forces participating in international operations, exercises and other events, and who have come to the Republic of Lithuania to spend more than three months there over a six-month period. In cases determined by the Minister for National Defence, status certificates are also issued to soldiers from other states who are participating in international operations, exercises and other events. A status certificate confirms a person's right to temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania for the period specified on the document, their legal status under the Republic of Lithuania's international treaties on the status of the armed forces, agreements based thereon, and Lithuanian laws and other legal acts. A status certificate is an identity document equivalent to a permit for temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania.
