Residence permits have a maximum validity of 5 years.
A residence permit may be granted for six different purposes.
The purpose of the permit is indicated in the top right-hand corner of the card using a colour code: "RESIDENCIA" (residence), in red; "ESTUDIANTE" (student), in orange; "TRABAJO Y RESIDENCIA". (work and residence), in green; "TRABAJADOR FRONTERIZO" (frontier worker), in black; "RÉGIMEN COMUNITARIO" (Community regime), in blue; and "ASILO" (asylum), in purple.
Technical and security features are identical in all cases
Spain ceased to issue this type of "PERMISO DE RESIDENCIA" on 21 January 2003, and now issues the uniform format residence permit instead.
