Residence permits are granted for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years.
A residence permit may be granted for six different purposes.
The purpose of the permit is indicated in the top right-hand corner of the card using a colour code: "RESIDENCIA" (residence), in red; "ESTUDIANTE " (student), in orange; "TRABAJO Y RESIDENCIA" (work and residence) or "RESIDENCIA Y TRABAJO" (residence and work), in green; "TRABAJADOR FRONTERIZO" (frontier worker), in black; "RÉGIMEN COMUNITARIO" (Community regime), in blue; and "ASILO" (asylum), in purple.
Technical and security features are identical in all cases.
Spain ceased to issue this type of "Permiso de Trabajo y Residencia" on 21 January 2003, and now issues the uniform format residence permit instead.
