The purpose of the permit is indicated in the top right-hand corner of the card using a colour code: "RESIDENCIA" (residence), in red; "ESTUDIANTE" (student), in orange; "TRABAJO Y RESIDENCIA" (work and residence) in green; "TRABAJADOR FRONTERIZO" (frontier worker), in black; "REGIMEN COMUNITARIO" (Community regime), in blue; and "ASILO" (asylum), in purple
Technical and security features are identical in all cases
Spain continues to use this type of permit for students, even though it began to issue the uniform format residence permit on 21 January 2003
