EU-Japan trade: facts and figures
The EU and Japan, representing a population of over 570 million people, together account for almost a quarter of global GDP and almost 20% of global trade in goods and services counted together.
Trade relations between the EU and Japan are based on the economic partnership agreement (in force since February 2019).
In 2024, EU-Japan trade in goods and services exceeded €190 billion.

EU-Japan trade in goods was worth over €130 billion in 2024. The EU was Japan’s third-largest trade partner, responsible for 10% of its trade. Japan was the EU’s seventh-largest trade partner.

The results of the economic partnership agreement
The economic partnership agreement with Japan has been in force for over five years. At full implementation, the agreement scraps 99% of tariffs for the EU and 97% for Japan.
Compared to 2018 (the last year before the agreement), total trade between the EU and Japan grew by close to 20%. Trade in goods grew by over 11% and trade in services grew by over 42%.
In July 2024, new provisions on cross-border data flows were added to the agreement. They deliver a number of benefits, especially to companies active in sectors such as financial services, transport, machinery and e-commerce.
Foreign direct investments
The cumulative value of EU foreign direct investment (FDI) stocks in Japan stood at €86.6 billion in 2023. The cumulative value of Japanese FDI stocks in the EU-27 stood at €212.5 billion.
