Timeline - International summits addressing artificial intelligence

G7 leaders recognised risks associated with children and youth's use of conversational artificial intelligence systems. They underlined the importance for providers to develop and apply safety settings by default for children and youth to make conversational artificial intelligence tools safer for children and youth.

The G7 also remains committed to fostering a research and scientific ecosystem for working on the opportunities and impacts of digital service and artificial intelligence on children and youth.

Leaders agreed to conclude a Cooperation Arrangement on AI to support further innovation and governance cooperation.

Leaders agreed to explore possibilities for cooperation in the area of artificial intelligence, aligned with the EU's AI act. This cooperation would assist Armenia's integration into the EU digital single market, ensuring the ethical and transparent development of AI technologies.

In a joint comprehensive strategic agenda adopted during the 16th EU-India summit, leaders agreed to collaborate in the field of AI and promote collaborative research focused on  AI, quantum, advanced semiconductors, clean tech and biotech.

The leaders expressed their commitment to harnessing the potential of digital and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), and mitigating the risks.

To ensure the safe development and use of AI, aspects related to human rights, transparency, regulation, ethics and data protection and governance must be addressed.

In this regard, the leaders also welcomed the launch of the AI for Africa initiative.

Leaders agreed to promote safe, secure, and trustworthy AI and its ethical governance, with a responsible and inclusive focus, investment into secure digital infrastructure and capacity building, and advocate for a human-centric, secure, and open digital transformation.

To fully realise the potential of AI, leaders committed to:

• working together to boost adoption of AI in the public sector
• helping SMEs to adopt and develop safe, secure and trustworthy AI, including by launching a G7 AI adoption roadmap that provides actionable pathways enabling companies to adopt AI
• addressing the energy challenges of AI and harnessing its potential in the areas of energy efficiency and innovation
• expanding partnerships with emerging markets and developing country partners

Leaders intended to enhance cooperation on AI innovation, including collaboration on AI factories, to link our high-performance computing infrastructure and to deepen research cooperation in strategic technology areas such as AI and quantum. 

They will also work to align their frameworks and standards in the regulatory field to develop trustworthy AI systems.

To unlock the full potential of AI, equitably share its benefits, and mitigate risks, G20 leaders will work together to promote international cooperation and further discussions on international governance for AI, recognising the need to incorporate the voices of developed and developing countries.

They also welcomed the decision of G20 labour and employment ministers to establish guidelines for the safe, secure and trustworthy use of AI in the world of work,.
