Exhibitions

The archives organise exhibitions to foster knowledge of the history of Europe and European integration. Below you can find some of the online exhibitions created in the past by the Archives on various occasions.

Sicily in Europe, Europe in Sicily

An exhibition of documents from the EU's Historical Archives, photographs from the Alinari Archives and material from the archives of the Presidency of the Italian Republic and the Italian Senate. The exhibition aims to illustrate one of the turning points in the European integration process – the Messina Conference of 1955.

Ever Closer Union: the legacy of the Rome Treaties for today’s Europe 1957-2017

An exhibition of photographs and documents created in collaboration with the EU's Historical Archives, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Italian Presidency of the Council, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ANSA to celebrate the Treaties of Rome (1957). The exhibition highlights the roots of those treaties in the social, cultural and economic phenomena affecting Europe after the Second World War, and it traces the long-term impact of the European integration process triggered by those phenomena on European citizens' daily lives.

The Pillars of Europe: the legacy of the Maastricht Treaty after 25 years

The Maastricht Treaty was a turning point in the process of European integration. For the first time, the ambition of political union was formalised, moving on from the initial objective of economic integration as an instrument for political reconciliation. The exhibition celebrates the anniversary of the entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty on 1 November 1993 and the establishment of the European Union.
