EU action to support Ukraine

1. Financial and economic support

The chart below shows the contributions from both the European Union and the member states. By clicking on each section it also shows the amounts in detail per type of contribution.

2. Global food security and solidarity lanes 

Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion is intensifying a global food crisis, the EU has created routes to help Ukraine export its agricultural products.

These EU solidarity lanes have facilitated 55% food exports from Ukraine via land routes and EU ports. 

EU solidarity lanes also allow Ukraine to export non-agricultural goods and to receive humanitarian aid.

3. Humanitarian aid

  • 40 000 Ukrainian soldiers were trained as part of the EU military assistance mission

6. Welcoming refugees

Over 4.2 million people who have fled Ukraine were benefiting from temporary protection in the EU. 

 

Other EU measures

In June 2022, the European Council granted Ukraine candidate country status:

  • the Council will decide on further steps once Ukraine fulfils the conditions outlined in the European Commission's opinion on its EU membership application

The EU has imposed massive sanctions on Russia to weaken its ability to wage war:

  • by adding a significant number of persons and entities to the sanctions list, and by adopting unprecedented restrictive measures
  • there are 12 packages of economic and individual sanctions

The EU is also providing support in the areas of:

  • diplomacy
  • prosecution of international crimes
  • nuclear safety and security
  • energy and trade sectors
  • education and research
  • cyber-resilience and digital transformation
  • protection and reconstruction of cultural heritage
  • countering Russian disinformation
