EU-US trade: facts and figures

The European Union and the United States have the largest bilateral trade and investment relationship and the most integrated economic relationship in the world.

Together, they represent almost 30% of global trade in goods and services and 43% of global GDP.

In 2025, transatlantic trade in goods and services reached over €1.77 trillion (provisional data). Both the EU and US are top trading partners in goods for each other.

Trade surplus

The EU had a trade surplus with the US of around €20 billion in 2025, taking into account both goods and services. This represented only around 1% of total EU-US trade.

With regard to trade in goods, the EU had a surplus of €198 billion, and with regard to trade in services, the EU had a deficit of over €178 billion.

In that respect, the EU and US economies complement each other very well

EU-US joint statement

The EU-US joint statement, agreed on 21 August 2025, set out a framework for reducing tariffs and strengthening the transatlantic trade relationship.

In June 2026, the Council formally adopted two regulations implementing the tariff commitments set out in the Joint Statement:

  • a main regulation removing the remaining customs duties on US industrial goods and granting preferential market access for certain US seafood and non-sensitive agricultural products
  • a second regulation extending the suspension of duties on lobster imports, including processed lobster, from all countries on a most favoured nation basis

The regulations include reinforced safeguard and suspension mechanisms to protect EU economic interests. The main regulation will cease to apply at the end of 2029, while the lobster regulation will expire on 31 July 2030 unless further action is taken.
