The members of the European Parliament have elected Roberta Metsola as the new president.

My warmest congratulations to Roberta Metsola as new President of the European Parliament. The European Parliament is the beating heart of our European democracy. Looking forward to cooperating with you, dear Roberta. Charles Michel, president of the European Council

What is the role of the European Parliament president?

The president of the European Parliament is elected for a renewable term of two and a half years, i.e. half the lifetime of a Parliament.

The president directs Parliament's activities and chairs the Parliament's plenary sittings. The president represents the European Parliament internationally and in its relations with the other EU institutions.

Prior to every European Council meeting, the president of the European Parliament addresses EU leaders to set out Parliament's point of view and its concerns as regards the items on the agenda and other subjects.
