G7 meeting on Ukraine, 24 March 2022

On 24 March, G7 leaders met at NATO headquarters in Brussels at the invitation of the German G7 Presidency, to further strengthen their cooperation in light of Russia’s unjustifiable, unprovoked and illegal aggression and President Putin’s war of choice against independent and sovereign Ukraine.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also addressed G7 leaders via videoconference.

Vladimir Putin must be defeated. We need to support Ukraine, as much as possible and we need to implement the sanctions in order to put pressure on the Kremlin. Charles Michel, President of the European Council

In the margins of the meeting, President Charles Michel also met with Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.

Background information

The G7 is an international forum that brings together the world’s leading industrial nations: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The European Union is a unique supranational organisation rather than a sovereign state and is therefore a ‘non-enumerated’ member – hence the name G7 (Group of Seven) – and does not assume the rotating G7 presidency.
