With the geopolitical landscape evolving at pace, Europe is entering a pivotal moment in defining its future approach to security and defence.
Though external challenges are growing in complexity, they are also sparking a stronger sense of urgency and shared awareness across the continent.
In light of these developments, the Council Library invited intelligence analysts Chrystel Papi and Izabela Kantor from POLITICO Europe’s Research & Analysis Division to discuss the key choices shaping Europe’s security future – and the risks involved if decisive action is not taken.
The event, opened by Director-General of COMM Preben Aamann, took place on 10 April 2025, drawing 120 participants to the Europa Building Press Room for a focused discussion on critical areas such as:
the strategic context driving the EU’s evolving approach to security and defence matters
the challenges the EU faces in implementing these strategies
the financial and political constraints shaping the EU’s ability to translate ambition into action
As the discussion underscored, the EU’s ambition to achieve greater strategic autonomy and stronger collective defence is clear. Growing awareness of shared risks is fostering a stronger commitment to turn that ambition into action.
Library Guides on European Security and Defence
To help you explore European security and defence in greater depth, the Council Library has published three new Library Guides. Each one brings together a range of carefully selected books, articles, studies and reports covering EU defence, security and the European defence industry.
The guides can be used individually or together to gain a fuller, more nuanced understanding of the topic.
Building the Europe of Defence and standing with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder. Because, at the end of the day, what we all want, what we all deserve, what we are all working for, is peace and security.
