US Election: foreign policy implications

US Flag

The recent US presidential election dominated headlines across the globe. After a hotly contested election, the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, claimed victory over the incumbent, Donald Trump – a result that could have massive ramifications for how the US operates in the global arena.

With that in mind, the Council Library invited Dr John Raines, IHS Markit’s Principal Global Risks Adviser and Head of North America, Economics & Country Risk, to discuss what the future Biden presidency may bring in terms of foreign policy implications.

As IHS Markit’s lead analyst for United States, Dr Raines provides in-depth insight into the inner workings of the US government and its electoral cycle. In an informative and insightful talk, Dr Raines covered areas such as:

  • Why did a blue wave fail to materialise in the US Senate?
  • Will the Biden presidency reset the tone of the transatlantic relationship?
  • What are the prospects for the future US-China relationship?

The event is part of the series of Council Library information sessions with publishers, authors and information providers aimed at promoting the library collections to our users, and follows on from previous well-received IHS presentations on Turkey, China and Ukraine

IHS Markit provide information and analysis on global economics and country risks, including in-depth analysis and forecasts for around 200 countries. Council Staff can access the IHS Connect Country Analysis Service.
