An "autorisation provisoire de séjour" (temporary authorisation to stay) is issued to an alien who reports to a préfecture with a view to applying to OFPRA (Office français de protection des réfugiés et apatrides - French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons) for permission to stay under the asylum arrangements

- an alien who is carrying out voluntary social or humanitarian work for an organisation in France, under a contract concluded before entering French territory;

- an alien who is the parent of a minor alien child permitted to stay on medical grounds, who demonstrates that he or she has his or her habitual residence with the child and provides for the child's education;

- an illegal alien who has had the "arrêté préfectoral de reconduite à la frontière" (préfecture order to be returned to the border) which had been served on him annulled by the "tribunal administratif" (administrative court) pending the préfecture's decision to appeal or to re-examine his file;

- an alien who has obtained a qualification in France at least equivalent to a master's degree and who is acquiring further experience through a traineeship or employment
