Contracts for legal services

The Council Legal Service is the legal adviser of the European Council and the Council. It assists the European Council and the Council, the latter’s preparatory bodies, the presidency and the General Secretariat with a view to ensuring the legality of acts and the quality of drafting of such acts. The Council Legal Service also represents the European Council and the Council before EU courts and coordinates the defence of those institutions in cases before national courts.

The Council Legal Service occasionally has recourse to external legal advice. For example, it is represented by external lawyers in cases before national courts and assisted by external lawyers before the Court of Justice of the European Union in anti-dumping cases and also, in certain circumstances, in cases relating to other areas, such as that of restrictive measures. Contracts for legal services also cover ad hoc issues related to Belgian law or other national laws, notably in the areas of administrative, property and labour law.

In 2025 the Council Legal Service concluded 14 contracts for legal services for a total amount of €103 720.
