EU-wide IT systems for security and migration
Authorities across the EU share information through large-scale IT systems to:
- secure borders
- fight crime
- protect citizens
- manage migration
IT systems under development
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will record the crossings of the EU’s external borders by non-EU citizens
The European travel information and authorisation system (ETIAS) will carry advance checks on visa-exempt travellers coming to the Schengen area.
Schengen Information System (SIS)
- Used to consult or create alerts on wanted or missing people or objects (upgraded in March 2023)
Eurodac
- Database of fingerprints of asylum applicants registered in the EU (upgrade planned)
Visa Information System (VIS)
- Used to exchange information on EU visas between Schengen countries (upgrade planned)
European Criminal Records Information System (ECRIS)
- Used to exchange information on criminal convictions (upgrade planned)
