EU-Türkiye trade relations

The EU is by far Türkiye’s top trading partner, standing for almost one third of its trade. Türkiye is the EU’s seventh trading partner, standing for 3.6% of total EU trade. In 2022, the total value of EU- Türkiye trade reached almost €200 billion.

EU-Türkiye trade relations are based on an Association Agreement from 1963 and a Customs Union agreement (in force since 1996).

The EU is Türkiye’s top trading partner

Türkiye’s main trading partners:

  • EU27: 31.8%
  • China: 11%
  • Russia: 7.2%
  • USA: 5.2%
  • Others: 44.8%

In 2022, the value of EU-Türkiye trade in goods reached €198.3 billion (+75% in a decade).

EU imports from Türkiye totalled €98.7 billion.

The top imports were:

  • textiles (17.7%)
  • transport equipment (17.5%)
  • base metals and articles (17%)
  • machinery and appliances (15%)

EU exports to Türkiye totalled €99.6 billion.

The top exports were:

  • machinery and appliances (25.1%)
  • transport equipment (17.5%)
  • base metals and articles (13.2%)
  • chemicals (13.2%)

EU-Türkiye Customs Union

Entered into force in 1996. Since then, bilateral trade has more than quadrupled.

The Customs Union has limited scope:

  • it applies to all industrial goods
  • coal and steel and agriculture are covered by preferential agreements
  • it doesn’t apply to services or public procurement
