Election of the Eurogroup President

The Eurogroup members elect the Eurogroup President for a term of two and a half years by a simple majority of votes. Kyriakos Pierrakakis is the President of the Eurogroup.

Who can be elected?

Any sitting member of the Eurogroup may be elected President of the Eurogroup.

Duration of the mandate

The President is elected for a term of two and a half years.

The mandate may be renewed.

Election procedure

The President is elected by simple majority of votes of the euro area ministers with the responsibility for finance.

The election procedure is set out in Protocol No. 14 to the Lisbon Treaty.

The timeline below outlines the steps for the forthcoming election of a new Eurogroup president.

    Call for candidates

    The General Secretariat of the Council launched a call for candidates on 24 November 2025.

    Deadline for submitting candidacies

    Ministers had to submit their candidacies by COB on 28 November 2025.

    Election

    Ministers elected the Eurogroup President on 11 December 2025.

    Start of term

    The new president officially begins the term on 12 December 2025.

Eurogroup President

On 11 December 2025, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of Economy and Finance of Greece, was elected as Eurogroup President, in line with Protocol 14 of the EU treaties. The president will take up office on 12 December 2025 and serve a two-and-a-half-year term.
