Library guide on EU-Canada relations
The 21st EU-Canada summit will take place in Montreal on 29 and 30 October 2026. António Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will represent the EU.
The summit is set to mark a major milestone in EU-Canada relations, paving the way for an even broader and deeper political partnership. At the summit, the leaders are expected to launch an 'alliance for the future', a framework for shared prosperity and economic security, underpinned by concrete new initiatives to strengthen people-to-people ties, deepen economic relations and reinforce their joint stance on the global stage
The agenda of the summit will cover a wide range of topics, including trade, digital, critical raw materials, defence and security, as well as cooperation in education, research and innovation and youth.
A new library guide
The Council Library has put together a dedicated guide to EU-Canada relations, bringing together a selection of useful resources on the subject.
The guide includes books, articles, think tank publications, EU institutional sources, official EU publications, legislation and websites. It is not intended to be exhaustive, but rather to provide a useful starting point for anyone looking to explore the subject further.
It also highlights the results of all the Summits between the European Union and Canada since October 2016. During the 2016 summit the leaders signed the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA).
